In apparel production, errors made in the cutting room multiply across thousands of sewn units. Portable round knife and octagonal blade cloth cutters slice through fabric plies ranging from single silks to 1-inch fabric lays.
Keeping the high-speed rotating blade sharp and adhering strictly to safety measures protects both operators and garment quality.
1. Operating the Built-in Automatic Sharpener
Quality round knife cloth cutting machines feature an integrated spring-loaded abrasive grinding stone.
- Sharpen While Running: The blade must be rotating under power.
- Gentle, Brief Pulses: Lightly press the sharpening stone lever for 1 to 2 seconds, release, and repeat once. Never hold the stone continuously against the spinning blade—this overheats the high-speed tool steel, destroying its temper and causing blade pitting.
- De-burring: Ensure both sides of the blade edge receive equal honing to prevent the blade from drifting to the left or right when cutting straight lines.
2. When to Replace the Blade
As blades undergo repeated sharpening cycles, their outer diameter decreases.
- When an octagonal blade wears down past the lower throat slot of the base plate, it no longer cuts the bottom ply cleanly, leaving snagged threads.
- Replace worn blades immediately with genuine high-speed steel (HSS) replacements.
3. Critical Safety Protocols
- Always Wear Stainless Steel Mesh Gloves: The hand guiding the fabric lay MUST be protected by an EN 1082-1 certified chainmail cut-resistant glove. Never touch fabric ahead of the blade guard with bare hands.
- Adjust the Front Blade Guard: Keep the adjustable brass safety guard set exactly 2mm above the height of the fabric lay. Never operate the machine with the guard raised to maximum height.
- Power Disconnection: Always unplug the electrical power cord before changing blades or cleaning lint from the drive gears.
